Talent Show!

18th July'2008

Here is the story of my class's talent show narrated by my fellow Aruba Ilyas...

Holding a pen in my hand, wondering what to write about! It didn’t take much time for me to decide that I’ll be writing about the ‘talent show’, as at this very moment all what I can think about is the injustice done to X-Science A. I’ll be narrating all what we did since the start and what was the outcome of our tedious work.

At first we were given the topic “changing lifestyles” but as our class aims for nothing less then perfect refused to perform on this boring topic. Then I along with other council members of X-SCA went to Mrs. Ameer Ali with the request to change the topic. It wasn’t that easy to speak against the rest of the council, but I would give the credit of making this impossible task possible to the council members of COM A and COM B. Finally we were given the topic “merry mix” as in we could perform on any topic we feel like. The new topic was given on 14th November’07 and the talent show was scheduled on 24th November’07, Friday so it’s apparent that very little time was left. However with high moral we started of, with the only aim that we have to retain the tile which we got last year [Best drama - Heer Ranjha].

We chose “Devdas”, a legendary love story. The script was ready on Monday. We started practicing it. We were not completely ready, but still we didn’t quit as Winners never quit and Quitters never win. Thanks to our Head Girl Komal Sultan, that she shed tears and the talent show was postponed till next Friday, 30th November’07. So, now we had ample of time to work on it.

The whole class, stood united to achieve the goal we had set. We had too many directors and actors. It is said “too many cooks spoil the broth” but in our case it is not true, we say “The More the Merrier” Each person came up with new idea, and if you had seen the talent show you would have realized that how good those ideas were. The major problem was who will be playing the character of Paroo, first we tried Komal Ali, at that moment she wasn’t the right girl, our next option was Raeesa but she wasn’t up to the mark then we came back to Komal and on the final day she was the show stealer. After working on our acting we started of with the set design and the costumes. All what I will say about these two things is that we won the best set designing award and our costumes were so good that we could see the tension on the faces of our arch rivals!

Time flew away, finally the big day arrived. Unfortunately, on the last day our Narrator, Raeesa Alam fell ill, but she is so committed to her work that she came to school in that condition also, but she wasn’t allowed by the school doctors to stay in school any more. Her father came to pick her up, but we insisted him to let Raeesa do her part. There were a lot of confusions that at what number we will be presenting it, I mean we wanted to do it with Raeesa but we weren’t sure that whether she’ll stay or not, so we changed the sequence around 4 times. Thanks to the hosts that they bared us and did what we told them.

Finally we came on the stage after class 6th. The whole of the audience was spell-bound by the performance, the voice of the claps still echoes in my ears. Every individual did their best either they were on stage or back stage, and our class teacher, like always, added color to our play by supplying us all the items we need and by dressing-up the characters.

When we step down, the response we got gave us the news that we might be the winners. Then came the other performances of VIII and X-SCB. VIII did pretty well, but XSCB, according to us exceeded the time limit, still they were good.

After all the performances, came the moment for which we all were waiting anxiously. Yes, the announcement of the results! The judges came up to announce the results, at first they announced the result of the juniors, then came our turn, I mean the seniors. The 1st category which she announced was of “Best Actress” she asked the audience that who it could be, the whole of the audience shouted “Paroo” but to our utter surprise she said, “With deep regret, I inform you that its not paroo, however, its Amyna from XSc-B”. Well, we don’t mind that, neither we call it injustice as no doubt Amyna was good. Then came the prize for which we were waiting, the prize for the best drama…….the announcement left our mouths open, not with gay, but with a shock. According to the decision of the judges 8th was awarded though the audience called out DEVDAS. We even don’t mind that part, but the thing which drove us crazy was the next announcement which said that they haven’t considered Devdas as it was a copy!

We don’t intend to challenge the decision of the judges but we still want them to know, that devdas is a legend and one can’t change a legend. The story will always remain the same, and if they say that we didn’t put in effort, we had a movie to copy so we just want them to know that our creativity lies in summarizing 3 hours in 10 minutes. Exactly according to the time given, and if this is not enough, or we were not according to the criteria set therefore they disqualified us so why didn’t they did the same with the X-SCIB, their play was also a copy. Neither it was a skit/drama rather it was a talk show.

This sort of a talk show could be done by any of the junior classes also; there should be some difference between the work of the senior students and the juniors!!!! I don’t have any intentions to criticize them, all what I am trying to prove is that what happened with XSCI-A was not fair.

I am sorry if I was rude while trying to prove the inequality, but at this moment all of us are emotional. We don’t mind losing as, "In Great attempts it is glorious even to fail”, the only problem is why we were disqualified, when at the first place we were approved to present it on stage?

I would just clarify that we are not upset, and why should we be, after all we are winners, we won the best set design award, and above all through this the bond between our class got even more strong!!!!.
